Mass media is a medium or any transmission of information used to reach a large audience by mass communication (Thorne, 2018). Media can be divided into two types, traditional media and new media. The common forms of traditional media include newspapers, television and radio. On the other hand, new media is growing rapidly in the digital world such as internet. Social Media is one of the most common platforms in new media. Social Media is an interactive computer-based technology that allows the sharing of information and ideas and the building of virtual networks and communities (Investopedia, 2018). It can also be known as human communication that enable users to create or share content and interact with each other in social networking through the medium of mobile, computer or tablet.


Nowadays, social media is growing significantly and seem to play an important role in people lives throughout the world. We can search and access the information easily just a click of button. The example of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and more. Facebook is one of the earliest and popular social media. It is a best tool for communication because it can reduce the physical boundaries so that people can connect to each other anytime and anywhere in the world as almost every people around the world use it (Soffar, 2015). Facebook has launched Messenger application earlier for all the mobile users. It is used for chatting purpose and can also be used as video chatting tool. Hence, people can socialize and interact easily anytime and anywhere in the world.


Furthermore, Facebook is a source of news and information. It is one of the best sources for people to stay updated with the latest news that happened around the world. They can connect with the world by signing into the Facebook and get the information about various sectors in a shorter period of time. For example, people’s culture, religion and more. Besides than that, Facebook is a powerful tool for social marketing. Facebook provides a lot of advantages to marketing professionals and small business owners. Marketers can advertise their business through the ads of Facebook. Facebook’s ad allows the marketers to target their message to the target audience based on the demographic information such as geographic location, age and even interest (Evans, 2018). It can help marketers to promote their products and services and increase social media presence for the business.


In conclusion, there are millions of users around the world that use social media on day to day basis. Thus, it plays an important part in people’s daily lives and comes with a lot of advantages in fact we can owe a substantial part of our society’s growth to social media (Indiacelebrating.com, 2017). At the same time, people should use social media in a right and proper way because there are also some disadvantages of social media such as hacking, addiction and cyber bullying.
